Save the date! Chinese in Entertainment is excited to present our October Speaker Series “Over the Moon: A Conversation with the Filmmakers” on October 24 at 2 PM (PDT). Join CIE to hear from Director Glen Keane, Producer Gennie Rim and Peilin Chou, and Executive Producer Janet Yang!

Fueled with determination and a passion for science, a bright young girl builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of a legendary Moon Goddess. There she ends up on an unexpected quest, and discovers a whimsical land of fantastical creatures. Directed by animation legend Glen Keane, and produced by Gennie Rim and Peilin Chou, Over the Moon is an exhilarating musical adventure about moving forward, embracing the unexpected, and the power of imagination. The film stars Cathy Ang, Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong, John Cho, Ruthie Ann Miles, Sandra Oh, Robert G. Chiu, Margaret Cho, and Kimiko Glenn.

About the Speakers

GLEN KEANE (Director)

A 38-year veteran of Walt Disney Feature Animation, Glen Keane trained under Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men. Keane went on to create many beloved Disney characters such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Beast, Tarzan, and Rapunzel. In 2012, Keane depart- ed Disney to begin Glen Keane Productions as a way to further his artistic explorations in animation, design, and film. He has since gone on to collaborate with Google, the Paris Ballet, and Kobe Bryant. His most recent project is the Academy Award-winning animated film Dear Basketball, which he animated and directed in collaboration with legends Kobe Bryant and John Williams. He is currently directing Over the Moon, an animated feature, a co-production with Pearl Studio and Netflix, due to be released
in 2020.

GENNIE RIM(Producer)

Gennie Rim is an Emmy award-winning producer whose career in animation spans 20+ years. She has worked at Pixar and Disney on various films such as The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, and Up. After leaving Disney, she produced several independent and commercial projects including the Academy Award-winning animated short Dear Bas- ketball with Glen Keane and the late Kobe Bryant. Gennie is currently executive pro- ducing the animated preschool series Trash Truck for Netflix and the feature animated musical adventure Over the Moon alongside director Glen Keane.

Peilin Chou (Producer)

Peilin Chou is a Producer for Netflix Animation whose career in content creation spans 20+ years encompassing the realms of film, television, and theater. As Chief Creative Officer of Pearl Studio, Peilin produced Pearl Studio’s first original film Abominable, a co-production with DreamWorks Animation, which opened at #1 at the U.S. box office in 2019. Peilin started her career at the Walt Disney Studios where she was part of the creative development team that oversaw dozens of feature films projects, of which two of her favorites are Mulan and Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. Most recently, Peilin produced Over the Moon, an animated musical feature co-production with Pearl Studio and Netflix slated to premiere in Fall 2020.

JANET YANG (Executive Producer)

A Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning Hollywood producer with deep roots in China, Yang is a member of the Board of Governors of the Motion Picture Academy, as well as an officer chairing the Membership and Governance Committee.

Yang has worked with some of the most formidable directors and actors in the world. She came to prominence through her collaboration with Steven Spielberg on Empire of the Sun (Warner Bros). That was followed by a long partnership with multiple Academy Award-winner Oliver Stone—where she served as Executive Producer on the iconic The Joy Luck Club (Disney), and as a Producer on the Golden Globe-winning The People vs. Larry Flynt (Columbia Pictures). Her latest film is Over the Moon, an animated feature based on her original story inspired by the Chinese moon goddess. Iconic animator Glen Keane directs the movie for Netflix and Pearl Studios.
